1. MAKE A LIST OF SHOTS TO BE TAKEN:

Selecting the best angles at the venue, making a list of important shots to be taken and important events to be covered helps in capturing the best wedding frames. Consult the couple to know their preferences and implement them during photography session.

2. VISIT THE LOCATION BEFOREHAND:

Visit the wedding venue before the main event to scout the location to know the best angles, best lighting areas and best elevations. This exercise makes you familiar with the venue and its interesting facets. You can also convince the couple for a test shot at the location beforehand so that the images come out to be best.

3. DISCUSS YOUR WORKING STYLE BEFOREHAND:

Discuss your working style with the client and explain them your preferences. Clearly understand their requirements and number of shots they want in digital or print etc. Also discuss the key events or shots they want to include in their portfolio.

4. FOCUS ON THE SMALL DETAILS:

Focus on the props such as decorations, tresses, curtains, attire, jewellery, etc to add extra dimension to the photographs. Include them into the main wedding shots to impart a meaning to the event.

5. OPT FOR A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER:

Choosing a second photographer makes it possible to take different angles for the same shot. A single photographer cannot be present everywhere and it is also tedious to move around several times with the heavy camera gears for capturing a particular moment. Hiring a help or working with a team co-ordinates the angle and poses more efficiently.

6. PLANNED SHOTS AND CANDID SHOTS:

Majority of your shots will be candid as they need to be taken when the event is still going on. A planned shot with the couple can possibly happen in only 20-30 minutes of time frame allotted in the complete wedding process. For the planned shots, shoot the couple before the wedding ceremony starts or a day before the wedding as they will be fresh and enthusiastic. Make good use of the given time. After the wedding and the rigorous events the couple may not be inclined to pose for you.

7. LIGHTING:

It is important to focus on the lighting that will illuminate the stage and other areas. In India usually lighting is done by warm incandescence lights that may pose a problem for your photography. Try positioning your subjects between you and the halogen lights to discover that they can be fantastic back lights. Carry your portable lights on a wireless trigger to pitch in as and when required.

8. ARRANGE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY CO-ORDINATOR:

Arranging for a person from the family or a friend to organize the queue near the stage can be a great relief for photographers. Indian weddings are long, cluttered and tiresome affairs, hence getting the best shot among an disorderly crowd is a tedious job. Co-ordinating guests and family members near the stage can lead to good family shots, without any frame catastrophe.

9. GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE WEDDING EVENTS:

Wedding rituals differ from region to region and from community to community. Get prior information about the rituals and their timings in order to be fully equipped with the events. Knowing them beforehand will not let you miss the important moments intended for photography.

10. BE AWARE OF THE TIMINGS:

Weddings in India are one big carnival and stretch for a really long time. Do not expect everything on time as 2-3 hours delay is common and acceptable. Be patient and get the timing information beforehand and prepare yourself to be working overtime. If charging according to per hour basis make it clear in advance to the concerned person.

The above tips will prepare you beforehand for shooting marvellous wedding shots that are not only aesthetically high but also add ample emotional quotient. Gear up for making wonderful stories out of normal wedding events.
